Billmon is the pseudonym of a journalist who spends his free time writing for his blog. I spend some free time doing the same thing, but Billmon has more expertise than I, and he has access to cooler tools. Anyway, I was cruising the web today and I read his entry for June 11, 2005, which is titled Welcome Wingnuts. In this tiny entry, he provides links for right-wing nutballs upon which they may chew. I would like to make my own comments on these archived entries of his.
First, there is the entry with the oft-used (at least in Billmon's case) juxtapositioning of selected quotes from two seemingly different, even opposing, scenarios. In the first case, Billmon compares the antics of David Horowitz vis-a-vis David's efforts to oust the evil liberal influences of certain teachers at America's great colleges against the rise of the communist revolution in China.
Savvy readers of this column will note Billmon's incisive selection of a wide range of sources to accomplish his task: the unveiling of David Horowitz and his protoges as neo-communist, a.k.a. neo-Jacobin, a.k.a. neo-conservative. I really like the first post. Billmon even throws in a few modified Chinese communist posters for effect. The Ma and Pa Kettles of the USA probably have no idea how communism blossomed in China, and they certainly would never think of Horowitz, Lumbaugh, or Hannity as 'communist', now would they?
The second link is outright satire. If anyone understands the need for satire, they would recognize the several levels of hypocracy in the pictures. Nonetheless, the Delay dig is funny enough in its own right.
The third link is an attempt at some kind of character bashing, but it falls a bit flat. I mean, Dick Cheney is probably an OK guy, when you get past the Haliburton ties, the political double-speak and his unsportsman-like method of shooting quail. I think he is just another D.C. politician -- self-serving, indignantly righteous, and corrupted by too much money and power. People who generally use their opposable digit can plainly see that our military antics in Iraq are most definitely based primarily on the security of oil, which is much more than just another hydrocarbon. The world quite literally runs on the stuff and He Who Has the Oil Makes the Rules.
The fourth link is almost outrageous, until one realizes just how close the US invasion and occupation of Iraq sits next to the international definition of war crimes. In fact, there is plausible evidence and reason for an impeachment hearing against the current president. Don't believe me? Well, check out this. Read the subjects of the Articles and tell me that his conduct wasn't as disgraceful as Clinton's blowjobs.
In the meantime, see what Billmon has to say about a recent Bush appointee. It isn't pretty.
